Decades-old sawmills used circular blades, which left a nice rough surface on the stock as it went through the mill.
I got pretty lucky when I found this "ancient" lumber.
I had found these old porcelain electrical insulators at an estate sale years ago. I have no idea how old they are, but they read "Sears, USA" on the front.
I used a paint wash technique to make this old sawmill lumber resemble driftwood, and used solid brass screws to attach the porcelain knobs to the wood. The brass screws will take on a nice bronze patina after a year or so.
The outside knobs are on 16" center, so attachment to a wall can be done without anchors.
